Cytisine is an efficacious aid to smoking cessation

Cytisine is a nicotine receptor partial agonist like varenicline. A product containing cytisine, Tabex, has been licensed and used as a smoking cessation aid in some Eastern European countries for more than 40 years but is not available in other countries. Pooled results from 2 randomized controlled trials show a significant increase in long-term abstinence but more studies are needed. Cytisine is currently much less expensive than varenicline.
